When I first started learning about essential oils, I had no idea how powerful peppermint would be. It’s fresh, minty aroma is pleasant and blends well with other scents. And peppermint EO can boost our therapeutic endeavors in incredibly effective ways.
Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is one of the most common and beneficial essential oils available. There is a long list of uses for this oil, but relief from aches and pains, general rejuvenation, and memory boosting are just a few of my favorites. Read on to explore the power of peppermint essential oil.
Release muscle tension
Did you work out a bit too hard? Do you have a tension headache? If you have muscle pain or tension, peppermint oil can bring relief. There are a few ways you can relieve muscle aches with peppermint EO. The first option, which might be the easiest, is to add a few drops to your bath. On the days when the muscle tension is the worst, take a nice warm bath with the oils, and you should start experiencing relief. Another option is to add drops to a spray bottle or bottle of lotion, and rub it or spray it lightly on your skin. Pay close attention to the areas causing you the most pain.
Apply directly to the area for releasing tension in large muscle groups. For headaches, try dabbing a couple of drops of peppermint EO onto your temples or on the back of your neck.
Boost your energy … and your memory
Need a stimulating, focused atmosphere? Drop some peppermint EO in your diffuser, and the refreshing scent will boost your energy for an active day ahead. Diffusing peppermint can also help you regain your energy and recapture your focus at the end of a busy day.
Try studying with peppermint diffusing, then take the scent with you on a cotton ball on test day… you may be amazed by your improved recall. I know this technique works because it got me through nursing school.
You may also wish to try combining peppermint EO with other citrus (think lemon!) or minty scents that are also known to improve your focus and concentration.
Herbal remedies for improving digestion have long included peppermint. While plain peppermint tea is often the go-to home remedy for a stomach ache, peppermint essential oil is also ideal for other digestive problems. Whether you have a medical condition like IBS or acid reflux, or simple digestive discomfort from something you ate that didn’t agree with you, peppermint EO is your ally. You can also use peppermint EO if you are experiencing nausea. Bring peppermint with you on a cruise or in the car in case you get motion sickness.
Peppermint essential oil has an amazing cooling effect when applied topically on the skin. I find it delightful to use a lotion including peppermint after a post-workout shower. And it makes an ideal energizing foot soak if you’ve been on your feet all day– especially if you had to wear uncomfortable shoes. I like to add a few drops of peppermint EO to some Epsom salts to create a foot bath for a 10-minute soak that will help me catch a second wind so I can have a productive evening at home after a long day.
