Lemon essential oil is commonly available, easy to use, and boasts a wide range of uses. In this post, I’ll share 5 of my favorite ways to use lemon essential oil.
But first, let me to share some brief background on lemon EO’s production and chemistry.
While other types of essential oils are steam distilled from various plant parts- like blossoms, leaves, stems, or bark- most of the citrus oils, like lemon, orange, lime, etc., are cold-pressed from the rinds of the fruit. This processing method makes citrus oils generally less expensive than other types of essential oils. Good to know, because price can feel like a stumbling block if you’re just getting started with EOs.
The the high limonene content in lemon essential oil is part of what makes it so powerful. What’s limonene? It’s is the organic chemical compound that makes citrus fruits smell… citrusy. Limonene has antioxidant and antiinfective properties and is also used as an industrial de-greaser. This may sound boring and excessively geeky at first, but if you’re serious about supporting your health with EOs, it’s important to know the chemical properties of the oils. Knowing the chemical properties of individual EOs makes it easier to do your own research when investigating an EO’s health benefits.
Ok, end of detour. Here are five of my favorite ways to use lemon essential oil. Of course there are MANY others. What are some of yours? Feel free to leave your comments below.
The Ultimate Chrome Polish
I love my chrome kitchen appliances, but they’re prone to water spots and require constant cleaning to achieve that smooth, warm gleam I’m so fond of. Enter lemon EO: My favorite way to polish chrome of all time! I simply take a folded soft cloth, add a couple of drops of lemon essential oil, and start polishing. Grease splatters and water spots are gone in an instant, and a soft lemon scent is left behind.
Safety note: Be aware that lemon, like other essential oils, may dissolve some plastics. So when you’re wiping down the chrome parts avoid contacting plastic handles, lids, or bases with EO-saturated material
Effective Adhesive Remover
Do you ever struggle to quickly and effectively remove price tags from gift items, or stickers from your kids’ bedroom furniture? Lemon essential oil is a fabulous solvent, and makes quick work of that pesky adhesive-gum residue. Of course, you’ll want to test it first in an inconspicuous spot, because as noted above, essential oils may dissolve more than just the sticky gunk.
Non-Toxic Household Cleaner
Wary of toxic chemicals in your household cleaners? Disinfect germ-prone areas of your home, like kitchen countertops and doorknobs by making a natural toxin-free spray with lemon essential oil. Not only does lemon EO disinfect surfaces naturally, but the scent makes your whole home smell fresh and light every time you use it.
Fill a spray bottle with water and add about 20 drops of lemon oil. Spray the areas that need disinfecting and wipe dry. As you get to know other EOs over time, you may decide to add additional EOs, like tea tree or eucalyptus, to your household disinfectant mix for enhanced cleaning power.
Supercharged Tooth Whitener
Lemon EO offers great support for teeth and gums. While freshly-squeezed lemon juice applied directly to your teeth can be too harsh and even erode enamel over time, lemon essential oil can provide benefits without the harshness. Add a few drops of lemon EO to a small cup of water for a quick swish, gargle, and spit after brushing your teeth or between meals. This freshens breath and addresses areas your floss may not have reached. Lemon EO can also help whiten your teeth. After your regular brushing routine, simply mix a spoonful of baking soda with lemon EO, apply to your teeth, then swish.
Safety note: Citrus essential oils, like lemon, can cause photosensitivity, which means it makes your skin more sensitive to the sun. Avoid applying lemon essential oil direct to exposed skin before spending time outside.
A Magical Mood Lifter and Energizer
If you aren’t a morning person, but still have to get up early every day, lemon essential oil can help lift you out of the morning blahs. Try using an essential oil diffuser with lemon EO in an area of your home where you spend the most time in the morning. Whether it is your kitchen while preparing breakfast, or the bathroom where you are getting ready, diffusing lemon EO will improve your mood and make you feel refreshed.
And here’s an extra bit of great information: Lemon EO is an ideal diffuser blend partner. It plays well with other EOs you may wish to diffuse, adding an extra lightness-brightness to the scent you are diffusing. Try lemon with lavender, lemon with peppermint, or lemon with just about any other scent you can imagine.
