Lavender is one of the most popular, common, and useful essential oils. In fact, it has so many different uses and benefits it’s sometimes referred to as the “Swiss army knife” of essential oils.
In this post, I’m introducing my top 4 favorite reasons for loving lavender. Lavender essential is such an excellent sleep enhancer, mood booster, stress buster, and skin soother I wouldn’t want to live a day without it!
Restful sleep is an integral part of any comprehensive health improvement plan. Far too many people suffer from insomnia, but that’s a different post.
The inability to get a good night’s sleep is often rooted in life stress. When stress is paired with a failure to allow for enough hours of sleep a vicious cycle of deprivation and unhealth gets created.
The good news is that no matter how stressed or busy you are, you can improve sleep quality by relaxing properly before bed.
Lavender is naturally calming and soothing, which makes it one of your best allies for bedtime relaxation. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to a diffuser and switch it on about an hour to a half-hour before bed. You’ll enjoy a relaxing scent as you unwind from your day and go through your bedtime routine.
For added effect, you can apply a few drops of lavender essential oil directly to your bed linens. I like to add a few drops directly onto my pillowcases whenever I change them. If you’re using a pure unadultered brand of essential oil from a trusted source, it shouldn’t stain the fabric, but always test an inconspicuous spot first, just to be safe.
Another of lavender’s superpowers, at least for me, is mood improvement. Its naturally relaxing effect helps soothe anxiety, but I also find that the sheer delight of lavender’s floral scent never fails to lift me into a better mood in general.
I always feel like a brand new person after a nice long soak in a lavender bath. I’m a huge fan of Epsom salts, otherwise known as magnesium sulfate crystals. The magnesium has a muscle-relaxing effect, and pairs well with lavender. I simply add a few drops of lavender essential oil to the dry Epsom salts before I add them to the bathwater. Ahhhh.
I also like to keep lavender spritzer bottles in strategic locations around the house. Simply add a few drops of lavender essential oil to some water in a bottle of your choice (you can find spritzer recipes that advise adding other ingredients as well). I keep one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom. A light spritz of lavender in the air helps me frame a positive mood in the morning before I head out the door. And then it helps me clear the air from the stress of the day when I come home.
Lavender smells so good, it inspires me to breathe more deeply. Of course, those deep breaths help oxygenate my brain, which has a positive effect on… everything!
Stress is an ever-present fact of life in today’s world. We’re all exposed to it, all the time. Whether we realize it or not.
I’m always on the lookout for tools that help me and my clients manage stress. And lavender essential oil is one of my tried-and-true favorites. It’s portable, delightful, and plays well with other tools.
When you pair lavender with other techniques, like acupressure, for example, you can expect to begin experiencing far less stress in very short order. Try diluting a drop or two of lavender essential oil and rubbing it on specific pressure points. Even if you’re unfamiliar with specific pressure points, by applying an essential oil to general areas, like behind your ears or on the insides of your wrists, you’ll make an effective contact.
Lavender is not only good for mental health but physical health as well. Believe it or not, lavender has natural healing properties, which are great when you have skin irritations. Lavender is the ultimate skin soother in my book!
Whether you get a cut or scrape in the kitchen or you’ve spent a bit too much time outdoors and racked up some extra sun or wind exposure, lavender can help soothe the affected area. Remember to use good sense and logic when treating skin injuries: medical attention is required for large open wounds or deep burns.
I regularly add lavender essential oil to my DIY body wash, skin cream, and moisturizing lotion. I don’t like the artificial fragrances in most commercial products, so I’ve made my own products for years. I’ve tried many different bases and many different recipes, and lavender essential oil is an indispensable key ingredient in most of them.
I love lavender essential oil! It’s part of my daily life, and it has been for years. If you’d like to know more about how to make essential oils a part of your daily life, please contact me here.
